Working with your health professional

  • Health professional woman - largeAsthma isn’t something you have to deal with on your own.  In partnership with your doctor and other health professionals you can achieve good asthma control and live a full and active life. Asthma control can be improved with appropriate treatment, a written asthma action plan, self monitoring and regular asthma reviews.

    See your doctor regularly

Wondering how to find a doctor who’s right for you? Click here for some tips. Don’t just visit your doctor when your asthma gets worse. Many people find their asthma changes over time and by seeing your doctor regularly you can ensure you are taking the right type and amount of medication. Don’t forget you can ask your doctor questions while you are there. It’s a good idea to make a list of questions at home and take them with you – it’s easy to forget things when you’re there. Check out 10 things to ask your doctor for some ideas on what to ask.

Some doctor’s surgeries, health care centres or hospitals have asthma clinics, where you can make an appointment for a specific asthma review. There may be an “asthma educator” who has specialised training in asthma and its management and can help you with information and support.

    Talk to your pharmacist

Pharmacists can also be an important source of information, especially about the medications you are taking, and how to take them. Some pharmacists have also had additional asthma training, and are part of the Pharmacy Asthma Management Service (PAMS). To find a local pharmacy with this service, go to www.guild.org.au and search the participating pharmacy register for those offering PAMS in your state.
